Programme overview

Switzerland is planning an ambitious energy transition with far-reaching consequences on the national, cantonal, and on the municipal level. As a result, leaders in the energy sector from public administration, politics, and industry are faced with significant challenges of realizing political goals, redesigning the infrastructure, adapting business models to disruptive innovations, and strategically repositioning vis-à-vis new market entrants.
The training is tailor-made for interested executives in order to develop a thorough understanding of governing the social, technical, business/economic, and regulatory dimensions of the energy transition, as well as the competencies required to apply this knowledge at the local level. The overall aim of the program is to facilitate a dialogue between a group of passionate industry experts, government officials and academics and to actively foster a GET-community.
GET is an action learning program to develop a common understanding of the challenges and opportunities arising from the Swiss energy transition. Such an approach welcomes the confrontation of controversial opinions through critical discussion. As such, GET is also a continuous learning exercise that extends beyond the classroom.

Content

The topic of the energy transition is treated holistically within the framework of the program. The seven course modules deal with each dimension of the so-called energy trilemma as well as with the topic of governance connecting all elements. Site visits to utility companies, Empa’s demonstrators NEST and MOVE, Europe’s largest energy trade fair E-World in Germany and the recently completed Nant de Drance pumped storage power plant complete the program.

  • Module A: Policy/Regulation at Swiss Federal Office of Energy (27.04.-28.04.2023)
  • Module B: Business models at E-World energy & water, Engie, E.ON (22.05.-26.05.2023)
  • Module C: Renewable energy and Energy efficiency at Amstein + Walthert (05.07.-07.07.2023)
  • Module D: Governance and Energy systems at Empa & University of St.Gallen (30.08.-01.09.2023)
  • Virtual days: Zoom (dates are yet to be decided)

Impact Project

  • The strong practical focus of the program is also reflected in the final examination. Within an impact project, the participants analyze – under professional guidance and critical reflection – a current challenge from their everyday professional life that is directly related to the energy transition. The topic is determined individually by the academic director and the participants. That way, what is learned is directly applied in practice. This will generate concrete added value both for the participants themselves and for their employers.
