Programme overview

This certificate program offers a full range of courses meant to provide a comprehensive overview of the burning topic of environmental sustainability in Aviation. You will get the opportunity to identify a set of measures you can implement to achieve short, medium and long-term benefits from the environmental perspective while being conscious of financial sustainability. You will also examine how carbon credits are created, the types and locations of carbon offset programs and projects, review the standards that exist for validation/verification of carbon credits, and review the international standards and recommended practice that have been approved to date. You will have the tools to break-down sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) concepts and assess a basic SAF business case. Looking at the human aspect in a company, this program also blends the environmental specific courses with corporate social responsibility, organizational ethics and responsible leadership. These courses will help and guide you in finding your own answers to what ‘leading responsibly’ means at your workplace and how to engage in responsible decision making and avoid ethical blindness.

Programme Structure & Modules

Module 1: Sustainability Strategies (2.5 days)

Businesses need a new approach to creating long-term value by looking at the impact they have from an economic, social and environmental perspective. This course provides a framework for you to identify a set of measures you can implement to achieve short, medium and long-term benefits from a social and environmental perspective while being conscious of financial sustainability. You will get an overview of the most pressing issues aviation is facing in sustainability and receive guidance and tools to map out the landscape and plan a realistic and achievable sustainability strategy. The strategy includes carefully laid out timelines and goals in order to position your business to meet all regulatory and pressing sustainability issues and to meet passenger and corporate expectations in the marketplace. This course will address a wide range of issues including carbon and water footprints, energy, regulatory requirements, environmental trends, alternative fuels, policy and reporting, stakeholder engagement, strategic marketing and communications, environmental management systems, partnerships and more.

In this course you will discover the value and benefits for organizations with good environmental management. Become a specialist in designing and implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) for airlines, ground handlers, airline caterers and airline Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Organizations (MROs). During the course, you will learn how to design and develop an aviation-specific management system that drives environmental performance and keeps track of compliance obligations in all kinds of aviation organizations and airline business models.

Over 2 days this course will help guide you in finding your own answers to what ‘’Leading responsibly’ means in your workplace. The course will offer you a platform for reflection and learning about the practical challenges that employees and managers face in their professional life. Each session of the course centers around a hands-on case study, involves interactive class discussions and is enriched with key insights from different academic disciplines, like management, psychology and ethics.

This two-day course will show you the implications of adopting each method, its challenges but also benefits. At the end, participants will be able to assess each option against their own company and drive an informed decision towards the best option for their business model. As ICAO Member States begin to implement the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), there is growing importance for airlines to have a carbon strategy in order to ensure their business is not only compliant but also profitable. There are three options to comply with the environmental goals of the industry: eligible carbon offsets; sustainable aviation fuel; and low-carbon aviation fuel that meets the ICAO sustainability criteria. This two-day course will show you the implications of adopting each method, its challenges but also benefits.

In this 2½-days course you will learn how managers can address rising stakeholder expectations and how to engage in organizing responsibility and responsible decision making to avoid ethical blindness. You will discuss corporate social responsibility and explore various responsible management and compliance tools. You will also frame the theoretical and practical debate around CSR with an overview of its development with a particular focus on the aviation sector, its main CSR challenges and existing CSR approaches. You will also discuss the regulatory context that shapes and constrains responsible corporate conduct, discuss organizational ethics and examine the role of ethics and values in management and the unconscious biases that make responsible decision-making challenging.

This course will examine approved SAF standards, track and report for CORSIA compliance and monitor the status of ICAO approvals for SAF. In this 2-day virtual course you will explore the evolution of CORSIA (Carbon Offset and Reductions Scheme for International Aviation) at ICAO and review compliance and voluntary carbon markets, the standards approved by ICAO for CORSIA compliance, and how carbon offsets are created, bought and sold. You will also look at airlines’ and IATA’s experience with establishing standards for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, while highlighting significant airline investments in SAF off-take agreements and production facilities.
