Programme overview

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations have evolved into a critical mandate, driven by investors, regulators, and a wide range of stakeholders. Boards of directors now face a proliferation of ESG regulations and ESG metrics while striving for comprehensive decarbonization across scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 emissions. Simultaneously, board members must harness the numerous business opportunities arising from the shift to an ESG-conscious world.

This raises several issues that boards must reflect upon: What are the essential ESG questions that boards should be asking? How can boards effectively support and challenge their management on ESG? What are best practices in facilitating ESG-focused boardroom discussions? How can board committees contribute to ESG decision-making? What role does the chairperson play in driving ESG?

ESG for Boards is part of the St.Gallen Board Programmes. The programme brings together leading ESG scholars, experienced board members and thought leaders in the field of ESG excellence. The primary objective of the programme is to outline how ESG principles can be integrated into the company’s core business. It will feature tools, insights and first-hand experiences to support board members in navigating the ever-evolving ESG landscape with confidence. In doing so, it will strengthen the ability to make forward-looking ESG decisions in the boardroom that do not only satisfy reporting requirements but that also create real value for the company.

Agenda

In the first half-day, we will explore core principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). Understanding these fundamentals is crucial for board members to make informed decisions that align with ethical, sustainable and profitable business practices.

The second half-day focuses on the ever-evolving landscape of ESG, exploring how it can be leveraged to uncover business opportunities and mitigate potential risks, equipping board directors with a strategic edge.

Effective communication of an organisation’s ESG efforts is vital. We delve into ESG reporting standards, ensuring board members can transparently convey their commitment to sustainability and meet regulatory demands.

Board members play a pivotal role in driving ESG initiatives. This module empowers them to act as stewards, guiding their organisations towards responsible, long-term growth and fostering a culture of corporate social responsibility.
